In the mindset of “I want this car done ASAP”, we may find ourselves tempted by the “cheaper” option on certain components in order to buy more at once, finish our project quicker and feel we are saving money at the same time. If this is already feeling like a touchy subject to you…you have likely already learned the lesson we are talking about today.  I have personally learned this lesson on my 1JZ S13 Drift Car, at multiple points throughout the build. Along with identifying my problem, they offered solutions!  During the final stages of building my S13, I read everywhere on forums that cooling water temperatures was going to be a challenge. I was so close to my car being ready for a tune here at Boost Factory and all the cooling options I was reading about were “expensive” and going to take me more time to attain. So what did I do? Went searching on Facebook Marketplace and similar sites looking for a radiator and fan combination. Immediately found a S13 specific, tucked radiator that came with a single electric pull-fan. This rad and fan setup was a quarter of the price of the cooling setups I was reading about on the forums. Great find, right…!? Wrong!  Long story short, I installed the rad setup and got the car tuned. Fast forward to my first drift day with the car and I can do about a 30 second lap of drifting before I have to shut it down, and do multiple cooldown laps to help the water temps drop. The car was essentially un-drivable with this cooling setup and I was also risking the health of the engine due to the high temps the car would reach while on track. High water temps means higher oil temps resulting in the oil thinning and so on. I had to address the issue.  I then reach out to Boost Factory and get the ball rolling on a proper cooling solution for the car and end up going with a Koyo Radiator, Flex-A-Lite dual electric fans with shroud, along with a custom swirl pot. I have now wasted my time sourcing, and installing the tucked radiator and I have also missed out on valuable seat-time at the track due to the car's inability to keep cool. Not to mention I have now paid more in the end than I would have if I had just originally saved up some extra funds and went with the correct setup for my application from the beginning. Luckily my engine did not suffer any damage due to my impatience, and the car is now cooling as it should, while allowing me to enjoy maximum seat-time at the track.  When you are investing your time and money into this automotive passion, it is worth the extra time and research to do it right the first time.
